Have you ever drunk a wine from vines that are more than 125 years old? . In Australia, they have a special category for these 125 year+ rare vines - ‘Ancestor’. Well this wine pictured blows this category right out of the water - try 159 years old. Many people in the know consider this to be one of the world’s great Grenache wines. . Alex Head of @alexheadwine burst on to the scene in the Barossa Valley just over 10 years ago. He had no formal training as a winemaker - but stacks of passion and amazing relationships that were formed whilst working in sales at Australia’s top wine auction house, @langtonsfinewine . That allowed him to buy pristine fruit others could only dream of sourcing. From there he threw out rule book; he started to make Barossa wines that were elegant rather than ball busters. He achieved this by dialling down the ripeness, dialling down the oak - basically making wines for the table! Almost unheard of in this part of the world . This 2015 Ancestor Grenache is so revered it has already won the best Grenache Trophy at the Barossa Show, was named one of the world’s Top 100 wines by James Suckling, #1 Grenache by Huon Hooke and even James Halliday gave it 98 Pts. . What do you love, or what do you hate about #PinotNoir? One of my pet hates with Burgundy ~ when it’s bad, it’s really bad; ie insipid and flavourless - because there are no positive fruit flavours. And yet they still charge a hell of a lot of money for it. Coming from the New World wine producing country of Australia, our Pinot Noirs (and New Zealand’s) never have the same issues, even at the value end of the spectrum. . Case in point; this juicy number from @swanbaywines , the second-tier label of @scotchmanshill in the gorgeous Bellarine Peninsula of Victoria. Good honest fruit flavours, thanks to the sunshine hours Australia has in abundance. It was a stinking hot day on the beach so I even gave it a chill, which it handled no problem at all. #postbydrew #winewankers #wine @visitbellarinepeninsula
Guessing competition: . Where in the world is this #wine region. ANSWER: Armenia - and that is Turkey’s Mount Ararat (and little Ararat) in the background (that’s what made this guessing game even tougher!). Some of the world’s oldest wineries are located in this area (Ararat Valley) Indigenous varietals include Areni and Voskehat, but they also plant varieties such as Pinot Noir here too. When was the last time you visited Tasmania? And if you have never visited @tasmania , why the hell not! It’s heaven on earth! . Tasmania (that tiny island at the bottom of Australia) is renowned for its cool climate, making it perfect for sparkling wine production. @jansztasmania has always been a favourite of mine and this 2014 vintage cuvee is no exception. It is pure, refined and elegant. . I always make a big deal about the kind of stemware I drink sparkling wine from, but today, I’ve gone sideways and i’m testing out this new innovation, @halovinoglass . Let’s face it. We all hate drinking out of single use plastic glasses, but this is different. . HaloVino’s narrow rim and wide body allows better wine appreciation without the spills. The two sections snap together easily and it’s reusable and recyclable. $2 for a glass of wine - unbelievable! . Do you ever wonder if buying #wine by the glass in restaurants is a big rip off? I sometimes do. This week I discovered a great bar in Sydney that serves $2 glasses of wine every Thursday during Happy Hour, until the allocated wine run out - usually after 2 hours. On top of this, the bar was serving Pintxos snacks - just like they do in my favourite Spanish city, San Sebastián. . Let’s be honest - the wine being served wasn’t trophy winning quality - but nor was it cheap and insipid. It was just good, honest quality, that displayed excellent varietal character. Sometimes the friends you are drinking with, and the bar’s atmosphere, are far more important than the how much you’ve spent on the wine. It’s the reason why god invented quaffing wine! She’s good like that! They probably didn’t make much money on those wines, but the bar was packed and people stayed on after the wine had run out. Great strategy! . Restaurant owners/sommeliers - I get that you need to make money, and you do so on alcohol sales, but do you think $15-20 for a glass of wine (that is usually measured to the exact millilitre) is being fair? Especially when the same bottle can be bought in the bottle shop for just slightly more? Taxes, rent, staffing costs, and stemware aside, why is wine by the glass so expensive in certain parts of the world, but when you go to Italy and Spain, you can buy a decent glass for 2 euros? . #postbydrew #winewankers
What wine do you like to have with chocolate? On Saturday night I ate this gooey delicious chocolate ganache and paired it with this heavenly @cargoroadwines Desert Zinfandel. It was the best match of the night! . The secret to matching #wine with #chocolate is to ensure the wine is always sweeter than the desert. The #Zinfandel grapes from the Australian wine region called Orange were picked super ripe and were stop fermented before all the sugars were converted to alcohol. The berry sweetness was evident but so too was an excellent Tanic backbone giving the wine fabulous structure. . #Postbydrew #winewankers
